Introduction:
Florida City Gas, a subsidiary of Southern Company, has partnered with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to offer a 1,220 hours Natural Gas Operations and Distribution training program. This program is designed to prepare students for an entry-level natural gas general technician position. General Technicians are responsible for the maintenance of the pipeline system and customer service related functions, including deactivation of services, delayed match, corrosion inspections, and meter reading. Additionally, General Technicians function as members of a crew – engaged in installing, maintaining, repairing gas mains and service lines. General Technicians are also responsible for operating heavy equipment, using hand tools, basic leak investigation, assisting in mechanical joining, landscape maintenance, traffic control, and Encoder Receiver Transmitter (ERT) programming in conjunction with Automated Meter Reading (AMR) duties.
Employment Opportunities:
In addition to learning skills related to Natural Gas Operations, general technicians will be prepared for a Class B Drivers license, have a certificate in Heavy Equipment Operations, and learn basic welding. Immediate positions will be available with Florida City Gas and its affiliates.

Salary:
The average wage for an entry-level General Technician in the area of Natural Gas Operations and Distribution is $40,000 per year with the opportunity for overtime. This industry is projected to grow through 2024.
